Degrees in foreign languages

At the University of Strasbourg, you can study foreign languages, cultures and civilizations, or study languages alongside applied human sciences. We offer programmes at all levels, from Bachelor’s and Master’s to PhDs and University Diplomas (diplômes universitaires – DU).

The Faculty of Foreign Languages offers Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in 28 different languages. You can study one or several languages through Bachelor's degrees such as Foreign and Regional Languages, Literatures and Civilisations (Langues, littératures et civilisations étrangères et régionales – LLCER), Applied Foreign Languages (Langues étrangères appliquées – LEA), or Languages and Intercultural Studies (Langues et interculturalité – LI). Explore different regions of the world and dive into a variety of topics to gain the skills and perspectives needed for an international career. These programmes also help you navigate the digital world and artificial intelligence, teaching you how to use these tools effectively in your future work.

Master's degrees allow you to strengthen your skills in a specific field and combine language study with other skills such as translation and interpreting, IT, language teaching or international relations. The Faculty of Foreign Languages also prepares students for competitive teaching exams.

Learn French as a foreign language

The French as a Foreign Language Section of the International Institute of French Studies (Pôle Français langue étrangère de l'Institut international d'études françaises – FLE-IIEF) offers two types of programmes in French as a foreign language:

  • French courses alongside your degree – these courses are designed for non-French-speaking students enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in another discipline other than languages at the University of Strasbourg (not including specialised schools and institutes), either as part of a regular degree programme or an international exchange. Courses are available from A2/B1 to C2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). They cover French for academic purposes, sociocultural immersion, professional French, artistic and creative practices, as well as classes focusing on Francophone current affairs and French society and culture.
  • Intensive French courses – the International Institute of French Studies also offers a paid intensive French programme open to learners from A1 to C2 level of the CEFR. This programme leads to the award of the University Diploma in French Studies (diplôme universitaire d’études françaises – DUEF). Courses cover general French studies, with optional modules in French for specific purposes, French for academic purposes, as well as courses exploring Francophone cultures and societies.

Study one or more languages alongside your main degree

The Faculty of Foreign Languages offers courses for students from any discipline, as well as for university staff. These foreign language courses are available across the Faculty and through the Language Centre for Specialists in Other Disciplines (Langues pour spécialistes d'autres disciplines – LANSAD).

With assessment

Teaching units (unités d’enseignement – UE) and elective courses let you take one or more classes in foreign languages and cultures, from theatre classes in German or English to an introduction to Bulgarian or Persian poetry. Your choice of language and how you enrol will depend on the degree you are registered for.

Other faculties at the university also offer language classes as elective courses. For example, you can study ancient languages such as Latin, Ancient Greek or Aramaic at the Faculty of Protestant Theology.

Without assessment

Students and university staff can learn and practice foreign languages for personal enrichment (without ECTS credits).

The Pangloss Language Centre offers free resources and activities in nearly 30 languages, which you can use to boost your language skills, prepare for a mobility programme or simply discover a new language.

LANSAD also offers language courses specifically for University of Strasbourg staff.

Earn a language certification

A language certification demonstrates your level in a foreign language. It is useful and sometimes essential for your studies or your future career, in France or abroad.

The Language Certification Section of LANSAD helps you find the right certification for you, explains the certification requirements and provides access to the tools you need to prepare.
