Get involved in culture and the arts

The University of Strasbourg offers students and staff a range of opportunities to take part in cultural and artistic activities.

Take part in cultural workshops

The university's Cultural Activities Office (Service universitaire de l'action culturelle – SUAC) organises cultural workshops (Ateliers culturels) that allow students to discover or refine an artistic or cultural practice. These workshops count as an elective course (unité d’enseignement libre) and allow second- and third-year undergraduate students to earn three ECTS credits.

Professional artists and cultural partners lead the workshops, either independently or in collaboration with cultural organisations. Each workshop runs over one semester and includes 30 hours of training.

As a student, you can join one workshop per year (in either semester), regardless of your field of study or level, and no prior artistic experience is required.

Benefit from student-artist status

At the University of Strasbourg, student-artist status allows you to combine your artistic career with higher education studies.

This status helps you to:

  • Have your artistic practice recognised when it is intensive and formally documented (enrolment in a conservatoire, art, theatre or dance school, participation in competitions, festivals, artist residencies, etc.)
  • Adapt your studies to your artistic and academic needs (timetable adjustments, exam arrangements, authorised absences, access to certain facilities, etc.)
  • Receive support in developing and professionalising your artistic practice

The arrangements are discussed, set out and implemented in agreement with your faculty, school or institute.

How to obtain student-artist status

You will need to complete an application form, which will then be examined by a joint committee from the university and the Direction régionale des affaires culturelles.

For more information, contact the Cultural Activities Office (Service universitaire de l'action culturelle – SUAC) by email.

Join a student association

Many student associations offer artistic and cultural activities, including choir singing, symphony or wind orchestra, theatre, film and video, and event organisation.

By joining an association in Alsace, you can also develop your own projects and receive financial support from the Student Projects Support Committee (Commission d’aide aux projets étudiants – CAPE).
