Choose a cotutelle or international co-supervision

Both cotutelle and international co-supervision allow PhD students to benefit from supervision by two thesis supervisors and opportunities for international mobility. Students also gain access to the resources and professional networks of two institutions in two different countries.

Learn more about cotutelle and international co-supervision

The University of Strasbourg is a member of Eucor – The European Campus. For more information on cotutelle or international co-supervision of a PhD with another Eucor member institution, visit the Eucor – The European Campus website.

Cotutelle

  • Agreement: an individual agreement between the two institutions is drawn up after admission and before enrolment in the second year of the PhD
  • Supervision: two thesis supervisors oversee the PhD, one at the University of Strasbourg and the other at an international institution. Both thesis supervisors must be authorised to supervise research
  • Enrolment: PhD students enrol at both institutions each year but pay fees to only one institution.
  • Location: the PhD is carried out at both institutions. The individual agreement must include a timetable setting out how the student's time is divided between them. PhD students must spend at least one third of the duration of their PhD at the University of Strasbourg (one year for a three-year PhD)
  • Degree: each institution awards a degree, with a reference to the cotutelle arrangement and the partner institution
  • Defence: a single thesis defence is held at one of the two institutions
  • Language of the thesis: the thesis is written in the language of one of the partner countries. If it is not written in French, it must include a French summary. The language must be understood by all members of the examination panel

The University of Strasbourg is also part of the Franco-German University (FGU) network which offers funding for PhD students under joint supervision in France and Germany.

International co-supervision

  • Agreement: an individual agreement between the two institutions is signed after admission and before enrolment in the second year of the PhD
  • Supervision: two thesis supervisors oversee the PhD, one at the University of Strasbourg and the other at an international institution. Both thesis supervisors must be authorised to supervise research
  • Enrolment: PhD students enrol at a single institution each year
  • Location: the PhD is carried out at the institution where the student is enrolled
  • Degree: a single degree is awarded by the institution of enrolment
  • Defence: a single thesis defence is held at the institution of enrolment
  • Language of the thesis: if the thesis is not written in French, it must include a French summary equivalent to approximately 10% of the manuscript
