Green and open campuses

The University of Strasbourg has carried out major construction, redevelopment and renovation projects to transform ageing, energy-intensive campuses into greener, more welcoming spaces to study and work. These changes form part of large-scale initiatives such as Opération Campus and the national energy renovation plan for public buildings.

Transforming our campuses for the community and for the environment

The University of Strasbourg began implementing Opération Campus in 2013 with the development of the Esplanade park. What was once a largely concrete area has been turned into a park open to the city, with car parking moved to the edges of the site. The university community now enjoys a 10-hectare green space planted with local species. In line with the university’s environmental commitments, the park is maintained without chemical pesticides and uses a rainwater collection and treatment system.

The new park is designed with accessibility in mind, reducing steps wherever possible. Cycle and pedestrian paths connect all campus buildings, making it easy to get around. The university also promotes and supports active, sustainable ways to travel to and around its campuses.

To improve comfort while keeping energy use under control, the university has also upgraded many of its buildings, combining energy-efficient renovations with safety and accessibility improvements.

Spaces to study, work and connect

The University of Strasbourg is not just a place to study and work – it's also a place where the university community comes together. The Studium is an excellent example of this. Located between the Neustadt campus and the Esplanade campus, it offers work and meeting spaces, services for students and staff, a multidisciplinary library and a large hall dedicated to events and exhibitions.

Sport plays a central role at the University of Strasbourg, supporting the physical, mental and social well-being of students and staff. The University Sports Centre (centre sportif universitaire) is open to all, and the Sports and Physical Activity Office (Service des sports – SUAPS) offers over 80 different activities.

Staff at the university can also take part in sports and cultural activities, come together for social events or take advantage of training opportunities at the Maison des personnels.

The University of Strasbourg is committed to creating a healthier, more inviting campus for all students and staff. As such, it launched the smoke-free campus initiative. Building entrances are now smoke-free zones and the university offers free, practical support to students and staff who want to cut down on smoking or quit altogether.

The university applies the Services Publics + programme to continuously improve services in all areas that mainly serve students. Each faculty, school, institute and service has a Services Publics + contact responsible for implementing the programme. The Quality and Internal Control Department (Département Qualité – Contrôle interne – DQCI) of the Steering and Continuous Improvement Office (Direction du pilotage et de l'amélioration continue – DPAC) supports these contacts through a dedicated network. Like all public service users, students can also share their experience on the national Je donne mon avis platform.
