Consolidating interdisciplinary education at the University of Strasbourg

The University of Strasbourg has announced the 15 winners of the development programme for Instituts thématiques interdisciplinaires (Interdisciplinary Thematic Institutes - ITIs) of research and teaching. By creating these ITIs, the University of Strasbourg, in partnership with the CNRS and the Inserm, is consolidating its long-term policy in favour of interdisciplinarity and of strengthening the connection between teaching and research.

EPICUR Alliance: 8 partners gathered in Strasbourg to sign the partnership agreement strengthening their cooperation

The EPICUR Alliance has just signed a partnership agreement in Strasbourg, during its first Steering Committee. It confirms the support of the European Commission and strengthens the cooperation within the consortium to become an attractive, innovative European university, geared to the new generation of European citizens, to face the great societal challenges of the Europe of tomorrow.

Discovery of an untouched tomb in Egypt: “finding something new in an anthill”

After spending nearly three months in Luxor, Egypt, Frédéric Colin and his team from the Archéologie et histoire ancienne : Méditerranée – Europe (Archimède) joint research unit returned home from their mission on 20 December having discovered three new sarcophagi. Let us look back at this incredible adventure in collaboration with the French Institute for Eastern Archaeology that began in 2017 in the heart of one of the most intensively studied sites in the world.

Hydrothermal alteration, a clue to a better understanding of volcanic eruptions

Stratovolcanoes, like Vesuvius, are among the most dangerous in the world. Two mineral physics experts from the Institut de physique du globe de Strasbourg (Strasbourg Institute of Earth Physics – IPGS), Michael Heap and Alexandra Kushnir, studied hydrothermal alteration, a phenomenon that can reduce the permeability of lava domes and thus lead to explosive volcanic activity. The multidisciplinary study of the Indonesian volcano, Mount Merapi, appeared in the magazine, Nature Communications.

Metastasis in the bloodstream

Circulating tumour cells use the lymphatic and blood systems to spread throughout the body and form metastases away from the primary tumour. Jacky Goetz, a researcher at the Molecular Immunology and Rheumatology Laboratory (Inserm/University of Strasbourg) and his team have been instrumental in demonstrating that the flow properties of these biological fluids affect the probability of these metastases occurring. In particular, they noticed that slowing of the blood flow where arteries branch off enabled cancer cells to attach themselves to the vessel walls and then to migrate from the blood vessels to colonise tissues. Their work was published in Nature Reviews Cancer.

Two more winners of the ERC Proof of Concept grant at the University of Strasbourg

A EUR 150 000 ERC Proof of Concept grant has been awarded to Paolo Samori, Director of the Nanochemistry Laboratory of the Institut de science et d’ingénierie supramoleculaires (Institute of Supramolecular Science and Engineering – ISIS, CNRS/Unistra) and to Andrey Klymchenko, Director of Research at the Laboratory of Bioimagery and Pathologies (UMR 7021 Unistra/CNRS) to explore the innovation potential of their scientific discoveries.

Hemp against cancer

Over the course of several encounters and a "stroke" of destiny, Christian D. Muller, a pharmacology researcher at the Hubert Curien Multidisciplinary Institute (IPHC), has come to test the effects of hemp on cancer cells by cultivating them with a little known method. Member of the Francophone Union for Cannabinoids in Medicine (UFCM I Care), he will be present on 28 June 2019 at the international conference on pharmacological advances and therapeutic uses of cannabinoids.
