Franco-German Friendship Prize for the conductor of the University Orchestra

Corinna Niemeyer, the conductor of the University of Strasbourg Orchestra (OUS), received the Franco-German Friendship Prize in January 2018. Recognition for the orchestra's European engagement and for the work accomplished by the German conductor, who has been in the role since 2010.

2018-2022: a new landscape for research in Alsace

As of 1st January 2018, the University of Strasbourg, its associated institutions and its EPST partners (state-funded science and technology research centres) began a new five-year contract with the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation. Notably, this contract allows the university to structure the site's research organisation by strategically reorganising its laboratories.

A new university degree: "Towards the terroir through geo-sensory tasting"

The University of Strasbourg has created the first degree dedicated to viticulture, terroirs and geo-sensory tasting, i.e. how to rediscover a sense of place in wine. This one-of-a-kind degree will be offered starting from June.

Understanding glial cells to help fight neurodegenerative diseases

Brain Awareness Week was held in the first week of March, giving attendees an opportunity to investigate one of its little-known components: glial cells. We met with Frank Pfrieger, a researcher at the Institute of Cellular and Integrative Neurosciences (INCI), which seeks to unravel the mystery of these cells and their impact on the development of certain neurodegenerative diseases.

An innovative avenue in the battle against chronic pain

Neuropathic pain is a chronic disease that affects 7 to 10% of the French population and for which there is currently no effective treatment. Researchers from the Institute for Neurosciences of Montpellier (Inserm/University of Montpellier) and the Laboratory for Therapeutic Innovation (CNRS/University of Strasbourg) have now successfully identified the mechanism that gives rise to and continues to cause this pain. Thanks to this discovery, they have developed an innovative treatment prototype. When tested on animals, it had an immediate and long-lasting therapeutic effect on painful symptoms. This study was published on 12th March 2018 in Nature Communications.

Haruki Murakami, "a storyteller for adults"

On 15th and 16th March, the University of Strasbourg's Oriental Studies group held an international colloquium on the Japanese author Haruki Murakami. An opportunity to review the existing research on this author with Antonin Bechler, a specialist in contemporary Japanese literature.
