A step further in understanding the genetic origin of the variation in traits

In three articles published at the end of May 2024 in Nature, Nature Genetics and PNAS, Joseph Schacherer and his team “Intraspecific variation and genome evolution” of the Laboratory for Molecular Genetics, Genomics and Microbiology (GMGM – University of Strasbourg/CNRS), advance a little bit further into understanding the genetic origin of the variation in traits that can be observed within all natural populations.

ERC Synergy grants 2023: Michael Heap's ROTTnROCK project retained for funding

The ROTTnROCK project by Michael Heap, teacher-researcher at the Institut Terre et Environnement de Strasbourg (University of Strasbourg/CNRS /Engees) is the winner of an ERC Synergy grants 2023. The aim of the project is to understand the phenomena inside active volcanoes in order to anticipate risks.

Towards a better understanding of the transmission mechanisms of the Zika and dengue viruses

Aedes aegypti mosquitos are the principal vectors for dengue fever virus and other arboviruses, including the Zika virus, and for which there are no treatments. In a study published in Nature Microbiology, a research team from the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology*, in partnership with the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil, has analysed the full range of viruses present in 800 mosquitoes on a global scale.

Shankar Raman equates literature with mathematics

When Shankar Raman arrived in Strasbourg at the research unit Knowledge in the Anglophone Area: Representations, Culture, History (SEARCH), he managed to bring two domains that appear to be far apart closer together: literature and mathematics. To do this, Raman looked back in time to the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe when these two disciplines did not yet exist in their own right. He obtained a grant from the University of Strasbourg Institute for Advanced Study (USIAS) to write a book on the subject.

Prix Louise Weiss Prize – 10th edition

From 18 October 2022 to 09 May 2023 the Louise Weiss Prize in Literature aims to encourage the writing, reading and selection of texts by the student community. On a given theme, students are invited to write texts in French, English and, for this new edition, Spanish, in the literary genre of their choice. The 2023 edition is co-sponsored by the Ukrainian playwright Neda Nejdana and the young writer and poet Marina Skalova of Russian origin, both writers in the Writing Europe artist in residency programme.
